The time is 1856, the place is the Arizona Territory. Brandon De Wilde is the title character in the first of two movies he did for Disney. ( The other film was “Those Calloways”) While De Wilde is the title character, he is most definitely not the star of this Disney comedy/western. That honor goes to veteran actor Brian Keith.
Keith is Mose Carson, big brother of legendary frontier scout Kit Carson. According to Mose, Kit learned everything from him and it really should be him that is famous. Mose consoles his self by staying drunk and avoiding Indian fights. James Whitmore is veteran Indian fighter ,Captain Ewell.
Richard Long rounds out the cast as misfit soldier and ladies man, Paul Durand. This movie originally aired on Wonderful World of Disney in Oct. 1964. It was shown in three parts with each part being a separate story with the only tie-in being the main characters. All three parts are here and have been edited to remove the opening scenes of the previous weeks story that was used to “catch up” the viewers. Disney, who was usually a stickler for details, makes some historical blunders here, like cavalry uniforms that are circa 1870-1880, and a Remington derringer that wasn’t produced until ten years later!. All in all, this is a light hearted, entertaining film that is suitable for the entire family. It is typical of the Disney “classic” period.
